TAF Pre-Requisites - UPDATE

During a recent LEC teleconference, the following was determined and has now been actioned in Surfguard:

  1. Trainers and Facilitators of the following categories of awards are required to hold and also be proficient in that award to be endorsed as a Trainer or Facilitator:
    • a. Emergency Care (ARTC, Spinal, AFA, Pain Mgt, SMAdvFA)
    • b. Powercraft (IRB, RWC)
    • c. Specialist Powercraft (JRB, ORB)
    • d. Helicopter (not applicable to NSW)
  2.

  3. Trainers and Facilitators of the following categories of awards are required to hold the award, but not necessarily be proficient in the award to be endorsed as a Trainer or Facilitator:
    • a. Beach Management (SMBBM)
    • b. Radio (Radio Op, SMRC)
    • c. Aquatic Rescue (BM, SMAR, Gold)
  4.

  5. Assessors of the following categories of awards are required to hold the award and also be proficient in that award to be endorsed as an Assessor:
    • a. Specialist Powercraft (JRB, ORB)
    • b. Helicopter (not applicable to NSW)
  6.

  7. Assessors of the following categories of awards are required to hold the award, but not necessarily be proficient in the award to be endorsed as an Assessor:
    • a. Emergency Care (ARTC, Spinal, AFA, Pain Mgt, SMAdvFA)
    • b. Powercraft (IRB, RWC)
    • c. Beach Management (SMBBM)
    • d. Radio (Radio Op, SMRC)
    • e. Aquatic Rescue (BM, SMAR, Gold)

There was considerable discussion around this topic among the states as you can imagine, however it was passed unanimously in the final vote.
This means that there is consistency now, not only within states, but nationally.

You are reminded of the difference between proficiency and currency: while a member may not need to remain proficient to be a TAF,
there is still an expectation that they retain currency in the award which they are endorsed to train and/or assess.
Where TAFs are not able to perform the skills themselves, they should use subject matter experts where required to demonstrate these skills.
This knowledge however should still be held by the TAF, regardless of proficiency.

Should there be a situation where a TAF cannot demonstrate proficiency in an award, but you feel that they should still be endorsed,
please contact me as there is an opportunity to manually allocate the award in Surfguard which overrides the automatic pre requisite.
This will only be considered should there be extenuating circumstances and should not be abused.

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Regards
Pamela
